Scattering

Deflection of energy from its normal path, due to interaction with matter.

In optical oceanography and limnology, the energy in question is ultraviolet, visible, or infrared electromagnetic waves, interacting with water and substances dissolved or suspended in the water.

In addition to changes in direction, some interactions may induce a change in wavelength, known as inelastic scattering or fluorescence.
