Attenuation

Attenuation is reduction in light intensity due to both absorption and scattering.

Many attenuation coefficients are used to quantify the attenuation of particular optical parameters in specific measurement situations.  The beam attenuation coefficient c and diffuse attenuation coefficient Kd are among the most commonly seen in optical oceanography.
